The Gladstone doctor's briefcase, £385

Why the frame matters more than it looks
The hinged frame is not decoration. It is the reason the bag works.
A zip holdall opens along a line, so you pack it in layers and then dig through them. A Gladstone frame opens the entire top of the bag at once and holds it open while your hands are busy. You can see everything, lift out what is at the bottom without unpacking what is on top, and shut it with one movement.

A short history
The Gladstone was designed by J. G. Beard at his leather shop in the City of Westminster, London. Beard was an admirer of William Gladstone, the four-time Prime Minister, and named the bag after him.
From 1859 onwards Gladstone travelled widely, and it is said that a row of these holdalls would line the hallway of No. 10 Downing Street before each trip. His political peers followed, and by the end of the century the Gladstone had become a symbol of British refinement, sold to London's elite in the bespoke shops of New Bond Street and Piccadilly.
It has been known as a doctor's bag and a physician's bag ever since, because the profession adopted it for exactly the practical reasons above. The design has needed very little improvement in 160 years, which is the strongest thing you can say about any object.
Leather, patina and how ours are made
All four sizes are handmade from premium calf hide, chosen for feel and durability, and lined in soft suede.
Calf hide of this grade does something synthetic luggage cannot. It develops a patina. The colour deepens where the bag is handled, the leather softens at the corners and the frame, and after a few years the bag carries a record of where it has been. Owners tend to like their Gladstone more at year five than at year one. That is the argument for the price.
Our bags are made in our own atelier, a small family workshop where the craft is passed down through generations and traditional techniques are still used by hand. Making them ourselves is how we can offer this many sizes and colours in a shape most brands only produce in one.
Care is straightforward. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun, let it dry naturally if it gets wet rather than putting it near a radiator, and condition it occasionally.
